Event Reflection: Book Discussion

On April 15, the Baháí Chair for World Peace hosted a book discussion featuring two esteemed contributors to the volume published by the chair, "Infrastructure, Wellbeing, and the Measurement of Happiness." Professor June Thomas and Professor Carol Ryff engaged in a stimulating dialogue on key aspects of well-being, happiness measurement, and the impact of infrastructure design and construction. The discussion shed light on the interconnectedness of urban planning, human flourishing, and societal well-being.

Professor June Thomas, an urban planner, emphasized the pivotal role of planners in shaping better cities for people to live, work, and play. She highlighted the need to address historical inequalities and promote social justice through creating inclusive urban environments. Professor Thomas's insights emphasize the importance of community resilience and individual agency in fostering human vitality and happiness.

Professor Carol Ryff discussed the neurobiological aspects of well-being and the significance of encounters with nature in urban settings for health and happiness. Her perspective added a deeper understanding of how infrastructure impacts individuals' well-being and highlighted the importance of incorporating nature into urban design for holistic human flourishing.

The event not only provided a platform for these distinguished scholars to share their expertise but also sparked reflections on the evolving discourse around well-being, happiness measurement, and infrastructure development. It emphasized the need for a multidisciplinary approach to address the complex challenges facing modern societies and the critical role of infrastructure in fostering human well-being.

Overall, the discussion between Professor June Thomas and Professor Carol Ryff offered valuable insights into the intersection of infrastructure, well-being, and happiness, prompting further exploration and dialogue on creating sustainable and inclusive urban environments that prioritize human flourishing.
