Is Peace Gendered?

How did concepts such as peace (and war) become gendered? What are the social and political consequences of this gendering? After outlining the history and the drawbacks of essentialist trends, which associate women with peace and peacemaking, I argue that a feminist approach to the study and practice of peace challenges the notion that “world peace” is an unattainable ideal and offers important insights into the possible paths we may take in our human quest for peace. Last, I turn attention to a host of undertakings and activities that we as citizens should participate in and promote, so as to ensure that peace and peacemaking do not remain the sole preserve of professional politicians and diplomats.
